Description: 1874 Chapters on Animals Philip Gilbert Hamerton Vivian Akers Artist Autograph. First American edition of Hamerton's book on animals with beautiful artwork by Karl Bodmer and Jules Veyrassat. Binding is cracked open but holding together solidly; red cloth binding with gilt lettering; wear to the spine and slighly soiled boards. A few creased pages (please see photos) and some minor, general browning inside. Signed and dated on inside cover: "V. Akers March 16, 1912". I purchased the book in Norway, Maine, so have little doubt that this is a book that was in the artist's possession. (1912 is also the year of his earliest known work). Thanks for looking.
