In 1859 the Chilean government exiled him for writing articles critical of the government. While in exile he visited Buenos Aires, Montevideo, and Rio de Janeiro, where he collected historical data, and he later did the same in France, England, and Spain. He was one of the first Latin-American historians to explore the rich Spanish archives…subsequently served as a dean of the humanities faculty at the University of Santiago and as Chilean ambassador to Argentina, Uruguay, and Brazil. As a historian Barros Arana was more a painstaking investigator and annalist than an interpreter of historical events, though his works are somewhat coloured with ideas of Chilean nationalism.
