Dark red cloth binding scuffed at edges & bumped/worn at corners. Head of spine lacking - binding exposed. Tail o spine collapsed. Gilt lettering and illustration lightly rubbed, but still bright and legible. Ex-library sticker on tail of spine. Water dampness stain found on bottom edge. Ex-library stamp on front paste-down & fly-leaf. Previous ownership signature on front end-page. Title page detached, but included. Front gutter beginning to split - cording exposed at loose title page. Light toning throughout text-blocks, several instance of pencil marginalia. Binding is intact, but fragile in some places. Please see photos. Gotthardt Deltan Bernheim (1827-1916) was a Lutheran pastor, educator, and author born in Iserlohn, Westphalia, East Prussia. In 1846, he rode horseback to Lexington, SC to attend the South Carolina Synod's Classical Institute and Seminary, where he graduated in 1849. Licensed in the same year and ordained in 1853, he was pastor of St. Andrew's Church in Charleston, SC from 1853-8. During the Civil War he was influential in organizing the General Synod of Evangelical Lutheran Church in the Confederate States of America and served as a delegate to its sessions.
