Description: 1870-S 50c Seated Half Struck 10% Off-Center NGC AU NGC 1870-S Seated half dollar struck 10% off-center. The coin is missing portions of the design in the 3 o'clock area, and also shows a decent portion of the unstruck planchet. Seated half off-centers are rare, and are therefore very difficult to find for sale. Few are known, and most have problems of one kind of another. This is a desirable coin despite some surface problems. The sharp design detail gives the coin nicer eye-appeal. The cut marks are possibly marks made contemporarily by a merchant trying to determine if the coin was authentic, since its silver content could be in part determined by scratching the surfaces to see if the coin was silver throughout. The higher grade, AU, lends a much greater likelihood to this theory.
