Description: Circa 1870-1880’s this is an early cast iron snow eagle-snow bird roof guard. I initially had fifteen of them and each one measures approximately five inches tall by six inches wide and have an amazingly beautiful approximately 150 years of age and character. Each one weighs almost two pounds. Back in the day these snow eagles were mounted on the edge of the roof, generally above doors in order to prevent snow and sheets of ice in the winter from sliding down off of the slanted roof onto the head of someone who was entering or leaving the house. Today they are highly collectible and sought after as beautiful decorative architectural pieces of history. They can stand on their own or can be layed down and used as a paperweight. Each one is unique with different degrees of age, wear, coloring and character. Some have a charcoal’ish coloring while others have a red’ish tone. When they were new there was raised lettering on the back of the right wing but I cannot make out what it says. Some of the lettering is almost completely worn and others you can see remnants of the lettering. I believe that it likely had a manufacturers name and patent date or maybe both. If you decide to purchase one or more than one, if you have a preference as to choice of tone, please let me know and I will match up the particular ones that you want but they are all beautiful early pieces of Americana with tons of age and character.
