Description: Stereoview photograph of a group of railroad workers by a cabin in the woods of northern Minnesota, by Gaylord & Thompson of Duluth, Minnesota, circa 1869 or 1870. The view, entitled No. 89, Engineer’s Cabin, Lake Sup. & Miss. R.R., shows eleven men posing for their likeness in front a small log cabin with a sign above the door that reads Engineer’s Cabin No.1, L.S. & M. R.R. The place is pretty new—note all the cut stumps in the foreground. The man sitting on the roof at left appears to have a dog in his lap. A man seated at left holds a surveying tool, and the man turned profile to the camera at center writes in a book. Check out the three guys walking past behind him, seemingly unmindful of the situation. Look carefully at the way they’re dressed and how they carry their loads. These are Chinese railroad workers, and likely were posed intentionally for the photograph. The Lake Superior & Mississippi Railroad would stretch from St. Paul to Duluth. Construction took place at both ends, but did not start from Duluth south until late in 1869. I would guess that Engineer’s Cabin No. 1 was not too far from Duluth. The stereoview is in good or better condition with light wear and soiling. Note the light rubbing at the corners of the card. The photographs exhibit good or better tonal range (a tad light) but show good to very good detail. A great Western railroad image and an important bit of Minnesota history!
