Description: INFANTRY TACTICS, Vol. II (School of the Soldier; School of the Company; Instruction for Skirmishers; School of the Battalion); by Brig.-Gen. William H. Morris; New York, 1865. Cover and spine worn and damaged as shown in photos; back cover completely detached. Pages evenly toned. First blank page inscribed in ink "Geo. S. [or L?] Burger" with "12th Inf ty" [Infantry] lightly penciled underneath. Although at least 20 men named "George Burger" served in the Civil War, none appear to be a potential match. Given the 1865 printing date, the manual likely saw no Civil War service. Perhaps this George Burger served in a post-War "12th Regiment," such as a state militia unit, or the reorganized U.S. 12th Infantry (Regular Army), which fought in the Indian Wars. Please inspect all photos carefully.
