The first-listed facility also struck an unknown, although presumably very limited number of proofs that year, these coins representing the first in a run of exceedingly rare No Motto issues. The number of proof Liberty Half Eagles struck each year prior to 1859 has been lost to history because Mint officials did not record the mintage figures. Based on the number of surviving examples, however, proof No Motto Half Eagle production must have been extremely limited. In fact, the 1840 and 1847 are unique in that format and unavailable for private ownership, while the 1854, 1855 and 1856 are currently unknown in proof. Clearly, the collector or investor that succeeds in obtaining even a single proof No Motto Half Eagle from the 1839-1858 era will have achieved a significant numismatic feat. Beginning in 1859 and continuing through 1865, mintage figures for proof No Motto Fives have survived. These are still rare coins, however, but the type collector seeking a representative of this series will probably meet with success if they pursue the issues from that time period. Considerable resources and a decent amount of patience will still be required, however, as the most plentiful proof Half Eagle of this type - the 1864 - is still a major numismatic rarity with just 15-20 coins believed extant. There are two incredible branch mint proofs in the No Motto Liberty Half Eagle series, and both are unique for their respective issues. The first is an 1843-D listed in the NGC Census (June, 2007) as a Specimen-65. The second is an 1844-O that, although appearing in the 1890 Lorin G. Parmalee Collection Sale and the 1911 sale of the William Woodin Collection, has not been seen for nearly a century.Store CategoriesStores HomeColonialsHalf CentsLarge CentsSmall CentsTwo-Cent PiecesThree-Cent SilversNickelsHalf DimesDimesTwenty-Cent PiecesQuarter DollarsHalf DollarsSeated DollarsTrade DollarsMorgan DollarsPeace DollarsOne Dollar GoldTwo Fifty GoldThree Dollar GoldFive Dollar GoldTen Dollar GoldTwenty Dollar GoldCommemorative GoldThree-Cent NickelsOther
