Description: A VERY NICE EARLY PRINTING COPY OF A CLASSIC MYSTERY NOVEL BY WILKIE COLLINS, THE WOMAN IN WHITE. First published in traditional single column per page format by Harper & Brothers in 1860, this copy has 1862 on the title page, is also published by Harper & Brothers, and is formatted as double column. Overall it is in VERY GOOD CONDITION. The textured dark blue/black boards have been professionally refurbished including some rebacking of spine with similar colored cloth on bottom and top. Clear gilt spine titling, boards with light edge wear. Yellow endpapers, a previous owner penciled (looks like pencil) name and address (in Washington DC) on first free endpaper (not shown in listing photos) and also on the first page of the book (shown in listing photo), no further marks in 260 clean and solidly bound pages, followed by four pages of publisher ads. BEAUTIFUL B&W WITHIN TEXT ILLUSTRATIONS THROUGHOUT. There are occasional foxing marks on the pages - one example shown in listing photos. There is a light colored top stain on pages. A synopsis from the internet: "The Woman in White is widely considered to be one of the first mystery novels as well as a first in the genre of “sensation” novels. It was written by Wilkie Collins in 1859 and tells a story of intrigue in London. Walter Hartright is a young art teacher. One night in London, he sees a distressed woman dressed entirely in white. He gives her directions, and later finds out from the police that she had escaped from a nearby asylum. A little while after these events, he travels to his new position at Limmeridge House in Cumberland. When he arrives, the household is comprised of Frederick Fairlie, who is an invalid, and Hartright’s students, Laura and Marian Halcombe." B42
