Description: Condition as seen. NewbernFebruary 26th, 1862 Dear Friend, I set down to write you a few lines to let you know that I am alive and well. I received your letter and was glad to hear from you. All of the boys are well except Spooner. He is sick with the rheumatism. He is getting better now so he will get out in a few days. It is a unhealthy place. It rains here about half of the time. The mud is knee deep. It is warm days and cold nights. It is a god foresaken place if what I have seen is a specimen of the sunny south. God deliver me from it as soon as possible. I have seen one dated hard march and don’t want to see another. How we ever get along so well I don’t know. March all day til nine or ten o’clock and then build up a fire and make a pot of coffee and eat two or three hard breads, spread our blankets and lay down top sleep. Wake up in the morning with our canteens of water frozen under our heads. We had no meat to eat with out and killed a pig or cow. It is darn fine ___ to set down and talk but we don’t generally have a very hard time in camp. When they call for you, you must go to _____ some great man. Last Sunday we had to to out on review. It rained like hell. We had to march out five miles. It never rained harder by the time we get there____ pretty subjects for a review. There are some cursing you better believe. Tuesday we went again and had a pleasant time. It was a great time. There was twenty thousand of us. Today we have had another ducking. We have been down to Gen. Foster’s to a flag raising. It rained hard. This is a soldier’s life, a pleasant life to those that like it. They think we shall get home in May so they can get up another regiment to come back the last of June. I suppose a good many will enlist again. Thomas Potter is as fat as hog. He weighs 177 lbs. there is not much newer here. I must bring my letter to a close. I had a letter today from Susan. It was wrote the 16th. I have wrote two since hers was wrote. Give my love to all. Write soon. From your Dear Friend, T.H. Wright
