Description: 1862-1865 Civil War Token (F-219/320a) PRESERVE THE UNION / ARMY & NAVY Condition: While there is some carbon spotting (from being stored with another token) on die face 219, much of the coin’s original red luster on both sides remains intact and the reverse is near flawless with no circulation marks. The Official Red Book of Civil War Tokens describes this Item as: Patriotic Die 219 — Latin lettering in a circular fashion, stating: “THE FEDERAL UNION IT MUST AND SHALL BE PRESERVED” with 13 border stars. The sentiment is attributed to President Andrew Jackson, who on April 13, 1830, was a guest at a dinner party in Washington to honor Thomas Jefferson’s birthday. After multiple toasts, including by Senator John Calhoun, well-known for suggesting that his state, South Carolina, was at divergence on various issues with the government, Jackson uttered the phrase. Patriotic Die 320 — Open wreath, swords and anchor star at apex, with Latin lettering “ARMY AND NAVY” centered. FAST & SECURE SHIPPING! PLEASE CHECK OUT OUR OTHER AUCTIONS! GOOD LUCK BIDDING!
