Description: 1860 war department free frank stampless cover of Horatio G. Wright as captain of engineers, addressed to Geroge Cullum. CDS with free. Horatio Gouverneur Wright (1820-1899) graduated west point in 1841 and served as a military engineer until the start of the civil war; he was promoted to major general by August 1862, though not confirmed by the senate. His service was extensive and includes taking corps command at Gettysburg after Sedgwick's death. He eventually became chief of engineers in the army in 1879. Recipient Cullum also became a civil war general and later president of the American Geographical Society. This is probably the cover listed in ASCC. Your satisfaction is guaranteed.
