Description: J E Sowerby was a British botanical illustrator and publisher who was part of a family of botanical illustrators including his father and grandfather. He spent most of his life doing botanical illustrations with Charles Johnson who wrote the text for the works and was a lecturer in Botany at Guy’s Hospital. In acceptable condition, the boards are off and scuffed and the paper slightly discolored from age. Nice provenance, though: it was gifted to Mrs. Nilludge (?) from her husband on April 28, 1872. This is on the first spare. Inside at front is bookplate of the Cameron clan with the name Robert Cameron below. On the facing page (ffep) Robert Cameron is written with a date of Feb. 21, 1930. Above this is the stamp of the Massachusetts Audubon Society with the card pocket intact at the rear. Sowerby’s plates are intact and very nice. Has “The Fern Allies” at rear with illustrations. Acceptable Condition: 8vo: green publisher’s boards with gilt fern on front and gilt lettering on spine: front hinge has been “repaired” with a piece of tape but rear board is off with evidence of an attempt at a similar repair: Library marks on spine: softness and damage to head and tail: edge wear, scuffing and bent corners: bookplate inside front: names written in several spots: Sowerby’s black and white engraved ferns intact with occasional fingerprint: occasional cracked gutter: slight discoloration of paper due to age: “The Ferns of Great Britain: Illustrated by John E.
