In Vol. VIII are articles on Chile, Islands of the Pacific, Lake Ngami, the Florida Keys; also included are many stories and works of poetry, including the first segment of John WIlliam de Forest’s novel Witching Times (page 570, Vol. VIII). In Vol. IX, the remainder of segments of Witching Times are present on pages 11, 188, 297, 394, 515 & 621. John William de Forest (1826-1906) was an American soldier and writer of literary realism, who was best known for his Civil War novel Miss Ravenel's Conversion from Secession to Loyalty. He also coined the term for the Great American Novel (GAN), one which would embody the country in one text. After four years of European travel, De Forest returned to Connecticut in 1855 and began his literary career. His first novel, Witching Times, is an historical novel dealing with Salem, Massachusetts, during the witchcraft trials.
