The first great migration westward from the east coast was underway and the wagon trains were starting to swarm west. Gold had been discovered in California and the rush was on.The Methodist Church began publishing large numbers of hymnals to meet the demands of the American expansion This historic hymnal was printed during a rapid Pre Civil War expansion of the American frontier. The Methodist Church responded to the need of the pioneers moving westward by printing hymnals which could be packed with the other possessions carried by the settlers. These hymnals were often the only songbooks when frontier churches were established. There are words and not music staffs because so many of the worshipping places had no musical instruments. The hymns are uniquely noted with the meter number. This indication reminded people that many of our greatly loved hymns can be sung to other familiar tunes. For example ”O For A Thousand Tongues” is a Common Meter song. But it can also be sung to the tune of “Amazing Grace” and visa versa. In 1856 Texas was very much a frontier, with Comanche raids and outlaw problems. This antique hymnal would make a great gift to someone who enjoys singing… or a choir director… or a pastor or anyone special… or your own fine library! Please enjoy all the pictures as they are part of the description. Ask any questions. I am very responsive. Thanks for looking! Please see my other fine hymnals!
