Description: 1856 $5 The Valley Bank - Hagerstown, MARYLAND Note 1856 $5 The Valley Bank note from Hagerstown, Maryland. This bank operated from 1848 until it failed in 1856. This note features a Vignette of Liberty with an eagle seated by a shield with Justice on it at the upper left. This Vignette was later altered and used on the T-27 Confederate notes. Above the bank title is a Vignette of Hope seated by an anchor. On the lower right Justice / Commerce sits by a fancy "5" with Athena in the background.
