The leading bookbinder, Charles Lewis, was John Frederick's uncle, and his younger brothers, another Frederick Christian, and Charles George Lewis were also artists, the latter chiefly in the field of reproduction engraving, particularly after Edwin Landseer (1802-1873), a neighbor and friend from the childhood of John Frederick. Lewis and Landseer were trained together in Sir Thomas Lawrence's workshop. Lewis was first an animal painter, like Landseer, and frequently included animals in his later works, notably a gazelle he had in Cairo. He published prints of big cats and twelve domesticated animals in 1826 and painted two large animal scenes in Windsor Great Park which are now in the Royal Collection (John Clark(e) with the animals at Sandpit Gate, c. 1825 and Tate Britain). Lewis traveled through Europe in 1827, where he began painting in watercolours, and traveled to Spain and Morocco between 1832 and 1834. The drawings he made were translated into lithographs by himself and other artists and as Sketches and Drawings of the Alhambra, made during his stay in Granada 1833-4 (1835), and Lewis' Sketches of Spain and the Spanish Character (1836) published. For a time he was known as "Spanish Lewis" to distinguish him from "Indian Lewis", his brother Frederick Christian, who traveled to India in 1834 before dying young. Lewis was an early traveler on what would become a well-trodden path for English artists, albeit some ten years after David Wilkie in Spain. David Roberts, who became the second leading British Orientalist, largely through his lithographs, was in Spain and the Near East at the same time as Lewis, although the two rarely met, and William James Müller was in Cairo in 1838. However, no other English artist of this time stayed as long in the then Ottoman Empire as Lewis did during his last stay abroad. In 1837 he embarked on a journey that took him to Italy and Greece in 1840 to Constantinople. He traveled on to Egypt and lived in Cairo from 1841 to 1851 in a traditional upper-class house, which he often used as a backdrop for his paintings. In Egypt he made many precise drawings, which he converted into paintings after his return to England in 1851. In 1850 his watercolor Hareem (now in a private collection in Japan, which is fairly faded) was a great success at an exhibition in London and was praised by John Ruskin and other critics. In fact, this is the only major work he completes before returning to Cairo. He continued to paint in watercolors for most of the 1850s before returning to oil painting, which had similar themes and style, was quicker to produce, and sold at better prices. During the 1860s he usually painted two versions of the same composition, one in oil (for an exhibition at the Royal Academy) and one in watercolour, trying to match the price of the latter to that of the former. In his technique, Lewis developed a similar method independently of the Pre-Raphaelites, applying the paint to a white ground with a delicate hand to create a luminous, jewel-like effect.Lewis became Associate Member of the Royal Academy (ARA) in 1859 and Fellow (RA) in 1865 and was President of the Society of Painters in Water Colors from 1855, although at that time he abandoned the technique in favor of oil painting. The society would not allow its members to exhibit oil paintings, which Lewis now wanted to do, and he resigned in 1858. The painting is framed in a beautiful handcrafted metal leaf frame which is not being auctioned but is a free addition to the painting.Age-related condition is visible in the photos.
