Description: This is the FIRST AMERICAN PUBLICATION WITH CHROMOLITHOGRAPHIC PLATES. And while there are several copies with the chromolithograph FRONTISPIECE, there are only a handful surviving with ALL 10 PLATES. This is the 1852 Second Edition, but features all of the plates. The full title is THE HUNTER-NATURALIST: Romance of Sporting; or, Wild Scenes and Wild Hunters by Charles Wilkins Webber. Webber, both a journalist as well as an explorer and hunter, died at the age of 36 in 1856, only 4 years after this was published. Collectors include: big game hunting works, early color work, chromolithography, early John James Audubon related material and influence, Americana, early naturalist works, and early African safari material. Five of the chromolithographs are by Western artist Alfred Jacob Miller. There are also 2 chapters on John James Audubon (chapters 5 & 6). Chapter 6 also discusses Daniel Boone. The last 75 pages (p. 536 onward) are devoted to big game hunting in southern Africa. Near VERY GOOD Condition with light soiling, light edge wear & chipping, chipping and fading to spine. Soiling and wear to blank endpapers, one inch tear to top of first page of Introduction. The interior is bright and clean with some occasional, light soiling or smudges, but is quite attractive internally. The book has a few full page B&W illustrations & a large amount of vignette illustrations throughout. There are a TOTAL OF 10 FULL PAGE CHROMOLITHOGRAPHS: one is the frontispiece & the other nine are throughout the book. They are all in very nice condition with only some occasional, very light soiling. This is a beautiful copy. There are no loose or missing pages & the spine is firm, tight & square, which is amazing for a nearly 200 year old book with 610 pages. This is a rare gem.
