Hungarian Bible belonging to George Fisher (1795-1873), early Texas settler and a figure in the Texas Revolution. Born in Hungary to Serbian parents, he fought in the Serbian Revolution, then emigrated to Mexico, where he became a prominent settler, founded a newspaper and a Masonic lodge, and held various official posts. He played a part in instigating the Anahuac Disturbances, and in organizing the Tampico Expedition. He later moved to San Francisco. The front endpaper has his signature, as well as "Halász György", Hungarian for "George Fisher". Ex-library with the usual markings. Externally very worn and chipped, boards exposed most of the way around the edges, leather scuffed. Hinges badly cracked, boards very weakly attached. "Geo. Fisher" stamped on front cover. Pages have occasional foxing, some creases and nicks, minor blemishes.
