1851 Pope Pius IX Year 6 Silver Medal Large Viaduct Bridge BTW Albano & Ariccia

Description: 1851 Pope Pius IX Year 6 Large Silver Medal Vatican/Papal State Commemorating The Large Bridge Between Albano Laziale and Ariccia For Your Old Bronze Medal or Papal Related Collection- MED185 Details Description: A nice large and heavy silver medal issued by the Vatican in 1851 during the reign of Pope Pius IX to commemorate the large bridge or viaduct connecting Albano Laziale and Ariccia. Pope Pius IX was the longest-reigning elected pope in the history of the Catholic Church. Pius IX was ordained as pope in June 1846 and remained pope until his death in February 1878, a 31 year long papacy. The medal, which was designed by Giuseppe Cerbara shows the robed bust of Pius IX facing left in high relief on the obverse with the legend "PAVIS.IX.PONT.MAX.ANNO.VI." surrounding it and the name "GIVS. CERBARA. F." below it. The reverse shows a three teared large viaduct or bridge across a deep valley with houses on the top right side of the bridge and the legend "ALBANO ET ARICIA; PONTE CONJVNCTIS; MDCCCLI." in exergue. The design is in relatively high relief over nice clear fields especially on the obverse. It is lightly toned, especially on the obverse, and has great eye appeal. The edge of the medal is plain and unmarked. It is a truly nice looking medal, which would make a worthy addition to any collection. Please carefully review the photos as they are part and parcel of our description. Date: 1851. Origin: Vatican or Papal/Roman States. Artist: Engraver is Giuseppe Cerbara. Weight and Size: The medal weighs ~34 grams, is ~44 millimeters in diameter, and ~2.5 millimeters thick at the edge. Maker: Rome MInt. Marks: GIVS. CERBARA. F. below the pope's bust on the obverse. Reference: Mazio 688 and Lincoln 2270 Condition: For international buyers, please note that US postal rates for overseas shipping are very high and we are unable to change them. Additional charges will be incurred depending on the value of the item. Please check the cost of shipping before bidding. I would grade the medal extremely fine or much better. The medal has some wear to the high point, some scratching and bag marks to the surface. The edge of the medal is plain and unmarked. It has some minor dings or nicks to the edge. These are minor and do not distract from the medal's beauty. A great and beautiful medal to add to your collection.
