Description: Nice complete 47-page issue of the Boston weekly Living Age for 1 June 1850. This issue I neatly rescued from an old bound volume of the magazine with damaged boards. A very good copy. See photo #2 for complete contents. Highlights include: An opening serial novel (6 pages) by the notable Irish novelist Charles Lever called Maurice Tiernay, The Soldier of Fortune. This is the opening chapter, here first printed in America following publication in the Irish Dublin University Magazine. It was not published in book form until 1852 (and later much reprinted). An unsigned 9-page essay on the Memoirs of the Duchess of Orleans. A 6-page essay in review (with much extracting) of poet Robert Browning's Christmas-Eve and Easter Day. A "Letter from Jamaica" with some statistical information of interest on the island's imports and economy. An 8-page essay by the energetic Richard Monckton Milnes called "Germany and Erfurt." Numerous other essays, articles, news of the day, reviews, etc.
