Description: Welcome to BKCranston! Please take a moment to read the description, condition and browse the photos. Description: Oil on canvas by Thomas Story Officer, pupil of Thomas Sully. The canvas depicts a rosy cheeked woman with baby in her arms. She wears a white flowing dress with blue accent shawl. Beside the two is a small table with vase with flower blossom which the painting is named after. In script along the very bottom, hard to see, it is titled "The Blossom. It is signed and titled on verso The Blossom, T.S.O. 1848 pints. The painting needs a restoration, it is from a local estate just as you see. Born in Carlisle, PA on Aug. 15, 1810. Officer began his career in Philadelphia in 1834 and was a pupil of Thomas Sully. He worked in NYC and exhibited at the NAD during 1846-49. After traveling to Mexico City and Australia, he settled in San Francisco in 1855. Officer had a studio in the Vance Bldg, worked as a colorist for photographer George B. Johnson, and was active in the local art scene. His miniatures and portraits received high praise from the local press. His short time in San Francisco was not a successful one. An alcoholic and poverty stricken, he died of consumption on Dec. 8, 1859 and was buried at public expense in Lone Mountain Cemetery. I have placed a modest reserve to protect my investment.
