1846 Foreign Quarterly Review Signed Robert Lowell II, G.H Lewes, George Sand

Description: This is a now rare single issue (the next to the last published) of the American edition of the Foreign Quarterly Review for April 1846. The text is identical to the London edition, the only difference being the American printed outer wrappers and advertisements. The July issue of the quarterly, which began in 1827, was to be its last. A very good copy that has some little foxing scattered about the margins and text. This copy belonged to the Reverend, educator, and poet of some note, Robert Traill Spence Lowell II (1816-1891), the great great grandfather to the notable 20th Century poet Robert Lowell (full name Robert Traill Spence Lowell IV). Lowell's signature and Cambridge, Mass. address are inked at the top of the front cover. See photo #1. This is one of a dozen or so British periodicals that I have, and have had, on hand that once belonged to the Rev. Lowell that carry his address and signature. See photo #3 for complete contents. 130 pages plus a 6 page index and a few advertisements. Some highlights I find include: An unsigned opening essay headed "The Progresistas and Moderados in Spain." 21 pages. The youthful writer George Henry Lewes's essay on "[French author] George Sand's Recent Novels." 15 pages. Lewes also pens several reviews of new continental philosophical works in this number. An unsigned review of French author M. Michelet's Le Peuple. 14 pages British author and traveler J.A. St. John's "The English in Borneo." 42 pages. An unsigned essay, appearing here in the midst of the Great Irish Famine of 1845-1849, headed "Ireland, its Evils and their Remedies." 23 pages. Thomas Wright's "The Satirical Literature of the Reformation." 30 pages. An unsigned essay "Algeria, Past and Present." 15 pages. James Dennistoun's "The Recently Discovered Fresco attributed to Raffael." 6 pages. A "Foreign Correspondence" feature by Thomas Adolphus Trollope, (elder brother to Anthony, long resident in Italy). 6 pages. ETC. Some author identifications above are drawn from the Wellesley Index, II, 171-172.
