1845 Benjamin Map of the Hudson River

Description: 1845 Benjamin Map of the Hudson River WE SELL ONLY ORIGINAL ANTIQUE MAPS - NOT REPRODUCTIONS Title: Benjamin's New Map of the Hudson River. Description: This is an 1845 J.P. Benjamin map of the Hudson River created by the Troy Steam-Boat Company. Depicting the river from Whitehall, New York and Lake George to Staten Island, little is illustrated on either riverbank. Numerous cities and towns are labeled all along the river, including Troy, Albany, Hyde Park, Poughkeepsie, West Point, Peekskill, Tarrytown, New York City, and Brooklyn. Counties in New York are also labeled, including King's County, the county where Brooklyn in located. Roads running along both sides of the river and connecting every town along its route are shown as well. A text situated on both sides of the map details the railroad connections available when traveling with the Troy Steam-Boat Company, mileage between points along different routes, and the histories of cities between the Palisades and Troy. A short description of the Steam Boat 'Empire' is provided at the top of the right-hand column, along with a textual timetable of how often each of the Troy Steam-Boat Company's boats left Troy for New York City.Publication History and CensusThis map was published by J.P. Benjamin and printed by N. Tuttle in 1845. We have found that this map was published in several different editions in the mid-1840s with this being the only known example of the 1845 edition. Examples of the 1846 edition are part of the collections of a half dozen institution in the United States, including Columbia, Princeton, and the Newberry Library. Size: Printed area measures 28.5 inches high by 11 inches wide. Condition: Good. Even overall toning. Soiling. Closed tear extending one half inch into printed area from top margin professionally repaired on verso. Blank on verso. Shipping: Shipping rates are not negotiable. DHL or FedEx will contact the buyer by telephone to arrange tax payment if it is levied. Duty varies by country and we cannot predict the amount you will be charged. Some countries are duty free, others are not. Typically, a customs duty and/or VAT tax will be assessed on all parcels to continental Europe. Sometimes duty or tax is due in China, but is seems very random. Hong Kong, Singapore, Korea, and Taiwan have never assessed duty on a map we shipped. Maps shipped to the UK should be duty free as educational materials, but from time to time duty of 5% is assessed incorrectly by the UK customs agents. Insurance: All shipments are insured privately against loss and damage. All of our shipments require a signature for insurance purposes.
