Washington Irving was an American short story writer, essayist and diplomat of the early 19th century, who wrote stories such as 'The Legend of Sleepy Hollow'. His 'Sketch Book' (published serially throughout 1819 and 1820) was among the first widely read works of American literature in Britain and Europe. This particular collection of his essays discuss New York, the female character, modern fame, and figures such as Peter Stuyvesant. CONDITION In the original cloth, with decorative blind stamps and gilt to the spine. Externally, very smart. With fading to the spine cloth and minor rubbing and bumping to the extremities. Small marks to the boards. Internally, firmly bound with bright and clean pages.
