Description: Very Rare Hand Colored Engraving Of The "First Carriage Ariel" Concept Airplane In Flight Over London~1842 ~ Offered is a truly rare, hand colored engraving made by Ackermann, London in 1843. The print shows a concept flying machine called "Ariel" soaring over London. This was an early design of an aircraft powered by a steam engine and designed to carry passengers. Perhaps the first design of an airliner. While Ariel never did get off the ground due to the weight of the heavy engines, it was a significant experiment from glider designs to powered flight. This museum quality piece of early aviation history was done by Ackermann & Co. 96 Strand, London, in 1843. The Ariel Steam Powered Flying Machine was designed & patented by William Henson (1812-1888). This framed and matted print was later obtained by "General Motors Acceptance Corp" at their original (1919) NY office and mailed "4th Class" (1920's) to a company in Wisconsin.
