Nicely bound in three-quarter leather with marbled covers and end papers, six raised bands and gilt decorations on the spine, and gilt page edges on all sides. The book contains a double-page frontispiece, and 32 incredibly detailed double-page engravings of historic churches, hotels, clock towers, cathedrals, etc. - please see the photos for the complete list of contents. All 32 engravings are present and are firmly attached. Oversized - the book measures 20 1/8" tall x 14" wide x 1 3/8" thick. A very nice example of this scarce work. Additional photos can be provided upon request. Largely self-taught, Coney was an important English architectural draughtsman and etcher of the early 19th century. He created and sold pencil drawings of the interior of Westminster Abbey and other Gothic buildings from the age of 15. In 1815, Coney began a massive 14-year project creating etchings depicting exterior and interior views of the cathedrals and abbey churches of England; the project was published as "Views of English Abbeys and Cathedrals." The success of this work led to Coney being sought after by numerous publishers to draw and engrave views throughout Europe. He began this next project in 1829 - the result of which is the book offered here, "Engravings of Ancient Cathedrals, Hotels de Ville, and Other Public Buildings of Celebrity in France, Holland, Germany, and Italy."
