Description: This is an antique, original, hand-colored lithograph titled "THE LIFE & AGE OF MAN ~ Stages of Man's Life from the Cradle to the Grave." Early, circa 1840's variant (likely 1848, though there is no date of publication stated); published by J. Baillie of New York. Real wood frame with glass and wire hanger - the frame appears to be quite old based on the wire and the type of nails used on the back. The frame measures 17 1/2" wide x 13 1/2" tall x 3/4" thick. The lithograph itself measures 14" wide x 10" tall. The lithograph depicts 11 stages of a man's life beginning at five years old, followed by ages 10 to 100 at ten year intervals. Each stage is accompanied by a short poem at the bottom that includes a reference to an animal (with the exception of year 100) - here are a few examples: "Until the first five years are spent, A child is lamb-like, Innocent"; "With bull-like strength to smite his foes, At thirty to the field he goes"; "The cat keeps house and loves the fire, At eighty we the same desire." Nine life stages also include an illustration of the animal referenced. James Baillie was an artist and lithographer who was active in New York from 1838 to 1855. He discovered how to color lithographs while working as an independent contractor for Currier & Ives in the mid-1840's. This lithograph is Baillie's version of the classic image by Nathaniel Currier.
