Description: Offered - Interesting leather bound doctor's ledger and related paper items. The ledger once belonged to Dr. Seth K. Smith (1816-1886) of Newmanstown, Lebanon County, PA. The ledger starts with an index of patient names in alphabetical order. The names are matched with a page number where the history of care and transactions are listed. There are hundreds of names in the index and 192 double pages with transaction histories totaling 384 pages of handwritten medical content plus the index. The ledger is marked inside the front leaf - "Seth K. Smith, Account Book, Salfordville." It appears the doctor had practiced in Lower Salford and Upper Salford Townships in Montgomery County, PA in the early 1840s. There are dates between 1843 - mid 1844 noted within the ledger with names and towns corresponding to Upper and Lower Salford Townships. Some of the town names from the western part of Montgomery County, PA include Zieglerville, Groffs Mill, Woxall, Lederach, and Salfordville. It appears that Dr. Smith moved to Newmanstown, PA sometime in 1844. The towns and patient names correspond with Newmanstown and surrounding areas from 1844 through the 1860s. The vast majority of the ledger contains patient names and their occupations from Newmanstown. Some other local towns with patients listed in the ledger are Wolemsdorf, Sheridan, Stricklerstown, Millbach, Weaver's Mill, Stouchsburg Farm, and other local locations. Of note is the medical history of astronomer and blacksmith Lawrence J. "Lorenz" Ibach. There are two pages of Ibach's medical history, pages 50 and 173. Page 173 has the most information, unfortunately, that page shows the most wear and discolorations of any of the pages throughout the book. The medical history of Ibach's eccentric assistant, Bernstein, does not appear to be in the book. Also included with the book are paper artifacts from Dr. Smith including a hand-drawn map of Newmanstown dated 1850. The map has "Lawrence Ibach" written on the lower left hand corner in what appears to be the same hand that wrote the 1906 notes a front leaf (noted in the condition description). I'm unsure if Ibach had anything to do with the production of the map. There are also three pages that appear to be Newmanstown/Sheridan history handwritten in German, various handwritten scrap notes, and a cemetery map with named plots. If you're looking for a specific name, please contact me and I'll have a look. Age - 1840s - 1860s. Measurements - 15 1/2" x 7" x 1 3/8" - 3 pounds, 8 ounces.
