Description: Original engraving, by Joseph Clayton Bentley (1809–1851), after William Henry Bartlett (1809–1854), of Villa on the Hudson, near Weehawken, Plate 59 in Willis, Nathaniel Parker, American scenery: or, land, lake and river illustrations of transatlantic nature. Volume I. George Vertue, London, 1840. From one source: "The Villa, Highwood, located on King's Bluff overlooking the Hudson was the site of the duel between Aaron Burr and Alexander Hamilton July 11, 1804. The foreground, now filled in, is today the New Jersey entrance to the Lincoln Tunnel." Dimensions: engraved surface 4 3/4" x 7 1/4"; 8 3/8" x 10 3/4" overall. Creased in upper left corner, otherwise fine. This was from the inventory of Kennedy Galleries of New York, one of the oldest art galleries in the country. I obtained it, among others, at auction. Founded as H. Wunderlich & Company in 1874, as a seller of 'fashionable prints', the name changed to Kennedy & Company in 1912, and to Kennedy Galleries in 1952. The gallery space closed in 2005, and the print inventory has been liquidated over time. The present engraving was in a large folder, among others, each with their own sleeve, protected from light and handling. William Henry Bartlett (1809-1854) was a British landscape artist famous for his views of all parts of the world. He made several trips to the United States in order to gather sketches for a book about American scenery to be written by N.P. Willis and published by George Virtue. This was one of the most successful and popular series of such views of the nineteenth century. Of all images of America's past, these remain among the most popular.
