Description: RARE chapbook: CINDERELLA OR THE LITTLE GLASS SLIPPER . Cooperstown [NY]: Printed and published by H. & E. Phinney, 1839. Early reprint of an 1834 Phinney issue. 30pp. This copy starts at pg. 5. ELEVEN woodcuts already antiquarian to the publication date and showing fashions in the neo-Classical style seen between around 1800 to 1810. A fully elaborated retelling of the Cinderella tale. It is refreshingly "modern" in the sense that the woodcuts illustrate the key turning points of the story in a way not always seen in early 1800s works for children. One interesting detail is that a woman of color (and apparently African) is depicted as a house servant in the woodcut of the scullery scene. She is eating something from a plate that she holds, and a little dog stands begging on its hind legs in front of her (see photo) Notes on the publisher : Henry Phinney and Elihu Phinney, Jr. were sons of Elihu Phinney, Sr. (1756-1813), the first printer in Cooperstown, NY (1795). CONDITION: Missing wraps. Restitched with 1st page partially loose (see photo) 2 pages stained front and back at perimeter (see photos). chips to front and small chip and tear to back. PHOTOS show condition.I have other chapbooks/toy books listed.....please take a look.
