Description: This is a finely bound two-volume set of The Comedies of Aristophanes, as translated by C.A. Wheelwright and published in 1837 by D.A. Talboys of Oxford. The set is bound in full calf leather, with the boards ruled in gilt and the five-hubbed spines tooled and lettered in gilt with two painted spine panels. The endpapers and all page edges are marbled. Notably, this is the *first publication in English of Aristophanes’ risqué play Lysistrata* (albeit in heavily redacted form). The introduction to the play warns that “the Lysistrata bears so evil a character that we must make but fugitive mention of it, like persons passing over hot embers.” Nonetheless, the introduction reassures, “In spite of all the bold indecencies which the play contains, its purpose, divested of these, is, on the whole, very innocent…”. The two volumes of this collectible set of ancient comedies by the playwright known as “The Father of Comedy” are in very good condition but for some wear and rubbing to the leather, edgewear and shelfwear, light rolling to the corners of the boards and bumping to the lower right corner of the front board, very light soiling to the boards and spine, and faint toning to the pages. Please see photographs as to condition. There is what appears to be a small old auction number pasted to the rear pastedown of the second volume. Also please note that the old, original title lettering on the spine cuts off a tiny bit at the end of some of the lines because of the font size (thus, the spine of the first volume reads “ARISTOPHAN BY WHEELWRIGH” and the second reads “ARISTOPHANE BY WHEELWRIGHT”). The set is squarely and soundly bound and looks terrific on the shelf. It will be shipped bubble wrapped and boxed.
