With a memoir of the author, a beautifully illustrated title page, yellow pastedowns and endpapers and all edge patterned pages. This is an overall neat, clean and tightly bound copy, which is fantastic for a book of this age. Hannah More grew up in Bristol, the centre of the slave trade at the time. She was a keen Christian activist against slavery and philanthropist. She embarked on crusades against poverty, the education of women and the evils of slavery. She was such an inspiring woman and ahead of her time. This was Hannah More’s only novel and an early 19th century best-seller. It followed the story of Charles (Coelebs), a wealthy young man, who was in search of a wife who would meet all his deceased Mother’s high moral standards. This was published by J. Chidley, 123, Aldersgate Street, London in 1837 and printed by C. E. Knight, Printer, Upper Halloway, Middlesex. This novel was first published in 1809. The beautiful quarter-bound leather and paper boards are intact and in a good condition for a book which is 186 years old. There is bumping to the corners, some wear, and light scratches. Please see the photographs provided for further reference. The spine, board inner edges and corners are bound in black leather and the boards are bound in a marble decorated paper. There are gilt decorations and gilt lettering, over a red panel, on the spine. Inside, there is tanning to the pages, which is consistent for a book of this age. There is light foxing and light stains on the title page and various marks on the pastedowns and endpapers. Besides this, the pages are overall neat and clean, with just the very occasional small or light marks or light creases or small folds. There is a little rubbing to the inner edge of a couple of pages, but this does not obscure the text. The front free endpaper has, what appears to be, remnants of previous lettering and there is pen written on the overleaf of the front free endpaper. There are no further pen or pencil marks written inside this book. Some of the edges of the pages are uneven and roughly cut, but this is highly likely due to the construction of this book and is all part of its beautiful history. The page leaves were probably uncut and then severed with a pen knife. There is also a rip to the inner edge of pages 361 to 364. Although this has left a hole through these pages, it does not obscure the text. Please see the photographs provided. The pages are tightly bound and there are no loose pages. There are no missing pages and so all 364 pages are present. Please study the photos carefully as to the condition of this book, as they do form part of the description. This really is a lovely example of this beautiful historical book. This measures approximately 17.2 cm by 11 cm and 2.6 cm wide. It weighs approximately 323 grams. Thank you so much for looking.
