Description: An authentic XF details example of 1826/5 N-8 R3 is the scarce 1826 overdate variety. Full brow line is visible signifying XF. It was not listed in Newcomb’s text on large cents in the 1940's as an overdate. Further evaluation by specialists made the determination it was indeed an overdate due to a line visible in the upper part of the six connecting the ball of the 6 to main vertical loop to the left . This occurred in the 1970’s and the coin was added to the Red Book. As this was a straight line, not a curving line it was then determined to be an overdate rather than a repunched 6 over 6.The line is visible on this example due to its sharpness and earlier die state. Most survivors are low grade. Value in VF in the 2025 Red Book is $375 and priced at $1,100 in EF. With 8 known varieties for the date and a mintage of 1.5 million, possibly less than 200 thousand were coined of the 1826/5 overdate cent.
