Please see photos and ask any questions prior to purchase. Sir James Edward Smith (2 December 1759 - 17 March 1828) was an English botanist and founder of the Linnean Society. He enrolled in the medical course at the University of Edinburgh in 1781, where he studied chemistry, natural history, and botany. After moving to London in 1783, he became a friend of Sir Joseph Banks and, through him, purchased the entire collection of books, manuscripts, and specimens of the Swedish natural historian and botanist Carl Linnaeus. Smith founded the Linnean Society of London in 1788, becoming its first President, a post he held until his death. He spent the last thirty years of his life writing books and articles on botany.
