1824 Antique Print; St Peter's Hospital, Bristol after Edward Blore

Description: On offer: an original (i.e. not a later reproduction) scarce antique print "St Peter's Hospital, formerly the Mint.", Bristol. DATE PRINTED: 1824, dated on the print. SIZE: The printed area including titles is approximately 22 x 19 cm (8.5 x 7.5 inches) plus margins with a blank back (medium). ARTIST/CARTOGRAPHER/ENGRAVER: Drawn and engraved by Edward Blore. Edward Blore (13 September 1787 – 4 September 1879) was a 19th-century (Victorian and pre-Victorian) British landscape and architectural artist, architect and antiquary. PROVENANCE: A plate published in Memoirs, Historical and Topographical, of Bristol and its Neighbourhood by Samuel Sayer, published by J.M. Gutch, Bristol 1823. Samuel Seyer (1757–1831) was an English schoolmaster and cleric, known as a historian of Bristol. Following first William Barrett, author of the History and Antiquities of Bristol, whom he knew well, Seyer published in 1812 Charters and Letters Patent granted to the Town and City of Bristol. The Latin is printed under an English translation. Seyer was refused access to the originals in the Bristol council-house, and based his text on a late manuscript in the Bodleian Library (Rawlinson 247); he used a translation published in 1736. In 1821–3 appeared Seyer's Memoirs, Historical and Topographical, of Bristol and its Neighbourhood, with plates by Edward Blore and others (2 vols.), The work, which brings the narrative down to 1760, incorporated the archives of the Berkeley family and the Bristol calendars. Seyer's collections for a second part, on the topography of Bristol, were preserved in manuscript in the Museum Library, Bristol. TYPE: Antique plate engraving printed on paper. VERSO: There is nothing printed on the reverse side, which is blank. CONDITION: Good; suitable for framing. Please check the scan for any blemishes prior to making your purchase. BACKGROUND INFORMATION: St Peter's Hospital, Bristol could be found to the rear of St Peter's church until it was destroyed in the Bristol Blitz in 1940. A house had stood on that site since approximately 1400 and the hospital was a timbered, gabled mansion. In 1607 the building was bought by a rich merchant named Robert Aldworth who went about completely rebuilding it. In later years (circa 1634) it passed into the ownership of Thomas Elbridge and later still for a short period of time the building was the Bristol Mint. The old Bristol Mint was then bought by the Corporation in 1696 for £800 to be used as a workhouse for the Bristol Corporation of the Poor and it is in this role as a paupers' workhouse that the building is much better known. It was later called St Peter's Hospital as in 1820 85 inmates looked after 306 sick ones. After the cholera outbreak of 1836, the corporation of the poor rented the defunct prison at Stapleton, thereby founding Blackberry Hill Hospital. St Peter's Hospital was destroyed in the Bristol Blitz in 1940. St Peter's Hospice, established in 1969, is named after St Peter's Hospital. Please explore my ebay shop for more antique prints.
