1821 LOSS OF THE BRIG COMMERCE ON W COAST OF AFRICA BY ROBBINS SLAVERY SUFFERING

Description: I have here for sale a book entitled A JOURNAL COMPRISING AN ACCOUNT OF THE LOSS OF THE BRIG COMMERCE, of Hartford, James Riley, Master, upon the Western Coast of Africa, August 28th, 1815; also of the Slavery and Sufferings of the Author and the Rest of the Crew, upon the Desert of Zahara, in the years 1815, 1816, 1817; with accounts of the Manners, Customs, and Habits of the Wandering Arabs; also a Brief Historical and Geographical View of the Continent of Africa by Archibald Robbins. It is a thirteenth edition published in 1821 by Silas Andrus, Hartford, CT, USA. Fold-out b/w map of the Sahara Desert area of Africa at the back of the book. Commerce was a Connecticut-based American merchant sailing ship that ran aground on 28 August 1815 at Cape Bojador, off the coast of Morocco. Far more famous than the ship itself is the story of the crew who survived the shipwreck, who went on to become slaves of local tribes who captured them. They endured extreme dehydration, severe starvation, and ever-present brutality while roaming the Sahara desert with their captors. Full brown leather hardboards with gilt bands, a black leather title block with gilt lettering to the spine. Rubbed to both hinges and to head and tail of the spine. Front internal hinge is cracked so front board a tiny bit loose. Pencil marks to front free endpaper. Foxing throughout but all text readable. Condition: very good. 275 pages, 18 x 11 cm. We have over 2000 items in our Ebay shop on a wide range of subjects, so please feel free to have a browse and see if and anything else takes your fancy. Postage will be by Air Mail outside of UK.
