Description: The Pleasure of Hope With Other Poems: Thomas Campbell. 1819. Longman, Hurst, Rees, Orme, and Brown : London; and for Stirling and Slade, Edinburgh Thomas Campbell, July 27 1777 - June 15 1844 was a Scottish poet, remembered chiefly for his sentimental and martial lyrics. He was also one of the initiators of a plan to found what became the University of London. Campbell went to Mull, on the Inner Hebrides, as a tutor in 1795 and two years later settled in Edinburgh to study law. In 1799 he wrote The Pleasures of Hope, a traditional 18th-century survey in heroic couplets of human affairs. Bound in red calf with gilt decoration to both boards with gilt titles to spine and gilt compartments. Boards and spine show age related wear/marks/edge wear. Corners of boards and top/bottom spine are bumped/rubbed. Front board has separated (see fourth image) a clean separation that would be an easy fix. Paste down to front end paper. Neat ink name & date (1823) to blank end paper (fifth image). Some tanning/age spots, mainly confined to first and last few pages. Generally clean and bright internally with occasional tanning. Gilt to all sides of closed book block. Overall a clean used copy but please be aware this is an antique item, 200+ years old, & will show signs of age and use throughout. Will include FREE careful postage and packing via Royal Mail small parcel. Thank you. It has been decided that I'm the lucky one, nominated to dispose of a large collection of books that have been in our family for many years. We've also moved recently and I've made up my mind to make (some) inroads into our own collection of books. Some weird and wonderful titles, many very rare, particularly from the family library. I'll be listing them whenever time allows. Please keep dipping into the listings as I'm working my way through a large assortment of different books (and some other small/postable items). Any book dealers/collectors that would be interested in offering on a number of books, in one lot, then I will always do my best to shave the price by as much as possible. This would only apply to books listed as B.I.N. (I'll let the auctions run to give a fair chance to anyone interested). Please just get in touch with a list of what you're interested in and I'll get back to you with a price...same day in most cases. Thank you. I have given what I consider to be a fair and accurate description but if you have any questions at all about anything, please just ask.....before bidding. Please study the large images above to get an idea of the condition of the item........as usual any questions I am very happy to respond. Book(s) will always be carefully packed. I always obtain a proof of posting from the Post Office when your item(s) is/are dispatched.
