Known under the title 'Florence Macarthy' and 'Florence McCarthy'. Bound without half-titles. With the errata leaf to the rear of volume IV. This novel is written by Lady Morgan, who was best known for novels such as 'The Wild Irish Girl'. In contemporary circles, Lady Morgan was one of the most hotly discussed literary figures of her generation. Her most famous work brought her controversy due to the political nature of the content. 'Florence Macarthy' is also seen as Morgan taking revenge on Quarterly Review author John Wilson Croker who attacked her elaborate study of France under the Bourbon Restoration for praising the revolution. In 'Florence Macarthy' a Quarterly reviewer, named Con Crawley, is insulted and caricatured. CONDITION In a contemporary half calf binding, with paper covered boards. Externally, generally smart. Split to the front joint of volume II, and loss to the leather at the head of spine. Loss to the head of spines to volumes I and IV. Patches of rubbing to the boards. Internally, firmly bound. Small portion of spine loosely inserted to the books. Pages are generally bright. Occasional light spots to pages.
