Frontispiece map of Africa (published by Chapman and Hall and the Superintendent of the Society for the Diffusion of Useful Knowledge) and 4 further full page plates. From the different colouration of the page edges this is obviously a copy of the Travels made up from several copies by Bayntun for their client. LACKING – the letterpress title page and the portrait frontispiece. With the addition of a folding map. Ali’s Tent plate bound in at page 11 rather than 108 as called for. Cloth and half leather boards with page top edges gilt, marbled end papers, gilt African tribal decoration to the spine compartments and gilt titles to the spine. Pagination: folding map, illustrated title, [xvi], 424pp, 4 leaves of plates (page 11, 88, 209, 301). Provenance: no inscriptions or bookplates. Size: Approximately 8 ½ inches tall (22cm).
