He was born at Winston, County Durham. In 1810 he joined his uncle Aaron Arrowsmith in his map-making business in London. In 1821, they published a map of North America using a combination of a maps obtained from the Hudson\'s Bay Company and Aaron\'s own previous work. After his uncle died in 1823, the business was carried on by his sons Aaron and Samuel Arrowsmith until 1839 when John Arrowsmith took over the business. In 1834 John published his London Atlas, which were the best set of such maps then in existence. He followed the atlas with a long series of elaborate and carefully executed maps, those of Australia, America, Africa and India being especially valuable. In 1863 he received the gold medal of the Royal Geographical Society, of which body he was one of the founders. He retired from a fully active participation in the firm about 1861 but continued to revise some of his earlier work. His address was Hereford Square, Kensington, from which address he issued a map of Australia in 1862. In all, including revisions, he produced well over four hundred maps. He operated in a similar manner to his uncle Aaron, compiling maps for Hansard and the Royal Geographical Journal, and occasionally for other publishers, e.g. Burrs American Atlas (1839) and Greys Journal (1841). He reissued some revised version of his uncles large maps but in the main he concentrated his efforts on perfecting his London Atlas., first published in 1834, which he constantly revised and improved as edition succeeded edition. This was a normal atlas size. Also like his uncle his interest was largely on foreign discovery and he produced many fine and up-to-date maps particularly of Australia and South Africa, incorporating many the latest information. In 1863 John was awarded a gold medal from the RGS for his services to geography. He died at his house in Hereford Square in 1873 aged 83 years leaving unpublished some fine maps of the Australian Colonies and other countries, his stock of maps, plates and manuscripts being sold at public auction in 1874. Please note all items auctioned are genuine, we do not sell reproductions. A Certificate of Authenticity (COA) can be issued on request. What is an Antique Map The word Antique in the traditional sense refers to an item that is more than a hundred years old. In the past maps were sold in two forms, as a single sheet (broadsheet) or bound in an atlas or book. The majority of antique maps for sale today come from books or atlases and have survived due to the protection offered by the hardback covers. When considering a purchase The first thing to determine when staring a collection or purchasing an item, is what is important to you. Most collectors prefer to build their collections around a theme. You may decide to collect maps from one region or country, charting its development through time. Similarly you could collect maps of one particular period in time, by type (i.e. sea or celestial charts) or by cartographer. The collector might also want to consider the theme of cartographical misconceptions such as California as an island or Australia as Terra Australis or the Great Southern Land. The subject is so wide that any would-be-collector has almost endless possibilities to find his own little niche within the field, and thereby build a rewarding collection. Starting a collection & pricing Pricing is based on a number of different factors, the most important of which is regional. In any series of maps the most valuable are usually the World Map and the America/North America. The World because it is usually the most decorative and America because it has the strongest regional market. Other factors that come into play re: price is rarity, age, size, historical importance, decorative value (colour) and overall condition and quality of paper it is printed on. As specialised dealers, we frequently work with first time map buyers who are just starting their collection. Guiding new collectors on their first antique map purchase and helping new collectors to focus their interests is one of the most rewarding aspects of being an rare map dealer.
