Within these volumes the statesman, politician and historian discusses the history of the growth of papal temporal power, and 'papal usurpation of Supremacy', voicing his alarm at papal attempts to remove authority from kings. Hyde structures his work chronologically, beginning with the first three popes to the start of volume I, and concluding with a discussion of Clement X to the close of volume II. With portrait frontispiece to volume I.With an Index to the rear of volume II. CONDITION Bound in the publisher's original paper-covered boards. With half titles and endpapers retained. Externally, sound, with rubbing, heavier to the joints. Loss to the head of each spine. Joints are cracked with boards tenderly held. Light spots and general soiling to boards and spine. Spots to endpapers and fore edge. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright with the odd spot, mainly to the first and last pages. Many pages remain unopened, particularly to volume II.
