This work was a huge success, translated into numerous different languages with many critics praising Lanzi for his widespread learning, his masterful grasp of his subject, and also the classic simplicity of his language in the work. Hence, this work led Lanzi to be widely considered as the father of modern Italian artistic historiography, and a renowned authority on the subject. Each volume is written in the original Italian. Within this copy, volume II is bound with volume III, and volume IV is bound with volume V. This set includes the following volumes: Volume I: Schools of Florence and Siena. Volume II: Schools of Rome and Naples. Volume III: School of Venice. Volume IV: School of Lombardy, Mantua, Modena, Parma, Cremona, and Milan. CONDITION In a uniform full vellum binding. Externally, minor rubbing to extremities and head and tail of spines. Rubbing to spine labels resulting in slight loss. Marks to boards, with several small patches of rubbing to volume I. Internally, firmly bound. Pages bright and clean, with the odd spot to the occasional page. Slight marking to upper extremity of first and last few pages, not affecting text. Faint tidemark to lower fore edge of the occasional page, volume II, III and V, not affecting text. Ink mark to lower extremity of page 379, and fore edge 381 to 395 volume V, not affecting text.
