About the artist: Pierre Joseph Redouté (1759-1840), Flemish-born French artist, is regarded by many as the greatest flower painter of all time. Redouté was the official flower painter of several European monarchs, including Queen Marie Amelie, Queen Marie Antoinette, and Empresses Josephine. Redouté is also noted for his mastering of the stipple engraving technique (a process of using tiny dots instead of lines which resulted in a higher quality engraving).
