Mint personnel employed three die marriages to strike an estimated total of 774-1,630 Large Eagle Fives with the 1795 date. Survivors are very rare, the "common" BD-15 die marriage having an extant population of only 30-35 coins. BD-14 is known to the extent of fewer than 20 pieces, while BD-13 is unique. The rarity of this issue is due to the fact that it was produced during one of the most chaotic times in U.S. Mint history. For many years during the late 18th and early 19th centuries, the yellow fever epidemic forced a mass exodus out of Philadelphia and promopted a cessation of coinage operations at the Mint from August to November. When Mint employees returned to their task after the onset of cold weather, they were often faced with a pressing need to deliver as many coins as possible in very short periods of time. This is exactly what happened with Half Eagle production during the winters of 1797-1798 and 1798-1799, and the coiners had no choice but the grab whatever dies were readily available and send them to press. No attention was paid to whether the date on the dies matched that on the calendar, thus explaining the existence of 1795 Half Eagles with the Large Eagle reverse that was not introduced into the Capped Bust Right series until mid-1797.Store CategoriesStores HomeColonialsHalf CentsLarge CentsSmall CentsTwo-Cent PiecesThree-Cent SilversNickelsHalf DimesDimesTwenty-Cent PiecesQuarter DollarsHalf DollarsFlowing Hair DollarsSeated DollarsTrade DollarsMorgan DollarsPeace DollarsOne Dollar GoldTwo Fifty GoldThree Dollar GoldFive Dollar GoldTen Dollar GoldTwenty Dollar GoldCommemorative GoldCommemorative SilverPatternsTerritorial GoldThree-Cent NickelsDraped Bust DollarsGobrecht DollarsOther
