Description: Here is a great old merchant token made of copper, in quite splendid condition overall, measuring app. 7/8" across, with a plain edge. This lovely early British piece shows just minimal wear, really, and it was struck a shade off center, adding to its appeal - I have not cleaned or altered its appearance in any manner, with four of the pictures having been "enhanced" for clarity. The token is identified in the D&H token reference as Middlesex 1069, and it is a cute little beauty. What I'll call the obverse pictures a hungry-looking critter enjoying a nutritious meal among the plant life (I believe they prefer aspen), and the little fellow wielding the big tail faces right, with "The Beaver" above the scene and the date "1801" at the bottom. The reverse features a reclining lion facing the viewer, a playful-looking dog between its front paws, and "Exeter Change London" is around the top, with "London" at the bottom. Excellent. $300.
