Description: This is an original 1800s era CDV photograph of a Restaurant Wine Steward, most likely from Albany, New York where this was obtained. Albany has been the seat of NY State government since the 1700s I think, so they had a number of fine restaurants downtown serving the state leaders and lobbyists. It measures about 2-3/8" by 4". I would guess that this photograph was made IN the restaurant with a huge flash powder gun providing the lighting. Note the fancy patterned carpeting which suggests a high-end dining establishment. In the 1800s photographic lighting was often an inexact science when compared to the situation in a well-tested and well-characterized photographic studio, and so prints like this one might come out either too light or too dark as a result of the photographer guessing wrong. This one has strong details but a slightly washed-out appearance, suggesting a slight overexposure. The waiter or Wine Steward shown here was photographed with his apron, wine bucket, and bottles of "spirits". He has his thumb tucked inside of the apron. His name in on the reverse of the CDV; this photo must have been removed from an album at some point and part of the name was lost to the adhesive that held it in. His name appears to have been 'Emile Hey____th'. Heyworth maybe? FREE SHIPPING in the U.S.
