Description: This is a rare, inscribed copy of "An Eulogy on the Life of General GEORGE WASHINGTON, Who Died at Mount Vernon, December 14, 1799, in the 68th year of his age. Written at the request of the citizens of Newburyport, and delivered at the first Presbyterian Meeting-House in that town, January 2nd, 1800" by Thomas Paine (Robert Treat Paine, Jr.). 1800; Edmund M. Blunt; Newburyport, Massachusetts. Softcover with 22 numbered pages, and the original half-title page (front cover) and blank back cover. This copy is inscribed by Paine on the half-title page, as follows: "[illegible] Professor Webber / from his very hble servt [humble servant] / The Author." Note - this "Thomas Paine" is not the Revolutionary pamphleteer of "Common Sense" fame. The author of this eulogy was born "Thomas Paine," but changed his name to "Robert Treat Paine" (Jr.) in 1801 (after the publication of this eulogy, thus the reason for "Thomas Paine" appearing on the title page). Paine perhaps changed his name to disassociate himself from the Revolutionary Thomas Paine who was unpopular at the time. Robert Treat Paine, Jr. was the son of Robert Treat Paine, signer of the Declaration of Independence as a representative of Massachusetts.
