Winterbotham wrote this celebrated account of the United States while in Newgate Prison where he was serving a sentence for sedition after preaching two sermons on the 5th and 18th of November 1792. "In the first, on the double anniversary of the 1605 Gunpowder Plot and the revolution of 1688, he made reference to the French Revolution and to contemporary abuses, as he saw it, of the contract between king and people. This aroused local feeling, and a prosecution was talked of. In an attempt to put matters right he preached the second sermon, but on 25 and 26 July 1793 he was tried at the Exeter assizes for both sermons, and found guilty" RAREA1796FOQD
