By this time English thinkers had come to realize the earth was much older than the 17th C James Ussher assertion is was 4004 years old. Studies of sedimentary rock had led people to realize it took long periods of time for this to be laid down. While the age of the earth was unknown (as is was at the start of the 20th C), people thought it must be measured in millions of years. This GRAMMAR was true to the Ussher chronology, so gives one late 18th C view of the earth's history. It makes for an interesting read.
